Solubility Insoluble in cold water, but swells and softens when immersed in it, gradually absorbing from 5 to 10 times its own weight of water. Soluble in hot water, in 6 N acetic acid, and in a hot mixture of glycerin and water. Insoluble in alcohol, in chloroform, in ether, and in fixed and volatile oils.
Identification (IR) A. The IR absorption spectrum of the preparation of the test specimen exhibits maxima only at the same wavelengths as that of a similar preparation of the corresponding reference standard.
Identification (CUALI) B. A violet color is produced when adding a 125-g/L solution of copper sulfate pentahydrate and 85-g/L solution of sodium hydroxide.
Identification (CUALI) C. The contents do not flow out immediately for gelling grades. The contents immediately flow out for non-gelling grades.
