At present, China's traditional Chinese medicine extract industry has formed a certain scale, with more than 200 professional production enterprises, and many traditional Chinese patent medicines and simple preparations, fine chemicals and other production enterprises also produce extracts. There are 200-300 operating enterprises with generally small business scales, with the largest not exceeding tens of millions of US dollars.
In foreign countries, extracts are an important link and method for the application of plant medicine. In the speech at the 41st World Congress on Medicinal Plant Research held at the University of Dusseldorf Heine in Germany in February 1993, 10 of them introduced research on plant extracts and their active ingredients. In the late 1970s, Japan was about to make extracts from traditional Chinese medicine for application, and Singapore and other places also developed and widely used them. 25% of prescriptions in European and American countries contain at least one extract or compound from higher plants. In the United States, plant extracts account for over 95% of the herbal market, while raw herbs and other products have a market share of less than 5%. In Germany, herbal products mainly in the form of extracts account for 10% of the total pharmaceutical market and nearly 30% of the OTC market. Their herbal products are considered drugs rather than food supplements and are covered by medical insurance. It can be seen that plant extracts have a good application foundation and a wide market in foreign countries. The main varieties of traditional Chinese medicine extracts exported from China to foreign countries include extracts from Ginkgo biloba, Osmanthus altissima, Acanthopanax senticosus, Angelica sinensis, ginseng, and others.
